  3. White Island Marine Volcano

A fascinating, accessible, active marine volcano

    white island

White Island is one of the most fascinating and accessible volcanoes on earth. As New Zealand's only live marine volcano, scientists and volcanologists worldwide are attracted by its unique features.

Experience the fury of nature at work. View the yellow & white sulphur crystal beds & chimneys set amongst fumaroles that bubble & hiss steam.

Walking on White Island is often referred to like walking on the moon...an experience unlike any other. Here as you travel through this harsh acidic environment you will discover an immense crater protecting a stunning lake and punctuated by vents which demonstrate the pure power of the inner earth. The remains of the original 1930's Sulphur mine, slowly being reclaimed by Mother Nature, is also a interesting site.

White Island currently sits on an alert level rating of 1, meaning she is always active, constantly steaming. But don't just take our word for it - get up close with a White Island Tours who have over 18 years experience operating in this fascinating natural laboratory.

  4. Walking and running tracks at Mt Maunganui (Mauao)

A climb to the summit offers amazing views of the surrounding city and ocean

Mauao is the focal point of the western Bay of Plenty - a sacred place that dominates the landscape of the Tauranga area. It's also home to the most popular walking tracks in the region.

The track takes about 30 minutes for those who are relatively fit, and efforts are rewarded with stunning 360 degree views of the Pacific Ocean, nearby islands and the wider Bay of Plenty region

Mount Maunganui, or Mauao, is also the name of the extinct volcano which rises above the town and is the focal point of the Western Bay Of Plenty.  Shrouded in history and legend, the mountain is a dominant feature of the landscape, and a climb to the summit offers amazing views of the surrounding city and ocean.

For those who are relatively fit, the track to the summit takes about 30 minutes. Efforts are rewarded with stunning 360 degree views of the Pacific Ocean, nearby islands and the wider Bay of Plenty region.

For those eager for a more leisurely stroll or keen to find a stunning jogging track, the 3.4km Mauao base track  allows walkers and joggers to pass by scenery ranging from native trees, remote beaches to rocky cliffs.  There's also a good chance to see sea lions or whales from various points on the path or watch ships come in and out of the busy Port of Tauranga.

Rain or shine, summer or winter, the popularity of the track is evident on any given day of the year.  On average 700,000 people venture on the base track each each.
