The Sebel Melbourne history and information
The historical and architectural significance of this building is acknowledged by Heritage Victoria as one of Melbourne's most important examples of 19th Century banking infrastructure.
The building, designed in two stages by different architects, was originally constructed in 1876 and was the first official headquarters of the Bank of Australasia. The second stage of the building was completed in 1929 and was designed to match the original structure.
The uncomplicated interior design of the suites and public areas at The Sebel Melbourne complements the exterior and the original features including the banking counters, gold detailed ceilings and the Victorian coat of arms featured in the balustrade as well as the dramatic lighting. The original Board Room for the bank has been lovingly restored and is now a feature on the first floor corridor. The hotel's design highlights the historical significance of the building and its beauty.
The Sebel Melbourne opened its doors on 17th February 2001. The hotel is a magnificent tribute to the city's historic past, combining historic sandstone beauty with designer interiors to create a stylish boutique hotel in the heart of Melbourne.
Set amongst towering tree lined streets, on the corner of Collins and Queen streets, this beautifully restored and refurbished nineteenth century landmark, has been transformed by combining grand old architecture with luxurious modern facilities.
Offering the business and leisure traveller the choice of 115 non smoking studio suites, one and two bedroom suites, and loft suites, The Sebel Melbourne provides some of the most spacious accommodation in Melbourne.
Along with fantastic services and facilities, The Sebel Melbourne has an elegant dining and cocktail area; Treasury Restaurant and Bar. A contemporary conference area caters for meetings and conferences for up to 190 guests, weddings and cocktail parties for up to 300 guests.
